Why not join an RTPI Network NOW?
Only about a quarter of RTPI members in the North East are members of one or more of the RTPI Networks and Associations, the most popular being the Young Planners Network (over 40 members) and NAPE (the National Association for Planning Enforcement) (about 20 members). Other networks popular in this region include Regeneration, Development Management, Planning for Housing, Urban Design, and Planning Education and Research. Full details of all the networks and associations are available elsewhere on the RTPI Website.
It is a bit of a mystery why more RTPI members and students do not register for at least one network. Membership of most of the networks is free, and members get regular email newsletters on the topic of their choice, plus opportunities to contribute views on government consultations, access extra CPD opportunities, and share experience with other planners with similar interests.
For example, the Development Management Network is currently considering permitted development rights for small scale renewable and low carbon technologies, while the Rural Planning Network and the Environmental Planning and Protection Network are jointly considering Natural England’s Draft Policy on Soil. The Independent Consultants’ Network is helping update the RTPI’s guidance on “Starting out in Private Practice”. Newcastle NAPE member Roisin Corry contributed an article on negotiation skills to Planning on 20 November.
