Becoming a Chartered Member (Chartered Town Planner)
All students completing accredited courses from 2006 onwards (or a one-year Masters course from 2005 onwards) will take the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) as their route to Chartered Membership. For graduates who completed their accredited course prior to these dates, the previous membership procedures are still available until the end of 2008.
Students wishing to take the APC must register as Licentiate Members of the Institute following notification of success in their accredited courses, and once they are in employment. Licentiates are required to complete a minimum of two years of structured experience prior to applying for Chartered Membership through the APC. Up to one year can be gained prior to completion of an accredited course. The period of structured experience includes completion of a monthly reflective log book, a professional development plan and the support of a mentor. At the end of the period, the Licentiate will submit a 5,000-word report detailing his/her experience and the way in which it has contributed to the development of professional competence. This report will be assessed by APC Assessors and, if successful, the Licentiate will be elected to Chartered Membership.
