Legal Associate Member

09-Jan-07

This class of membership is suitable for legal practitioners with experience in planning law and who are not eligible to apply for Chartered Membership. Upon election to this class, members can use the designation LARTPI after their names.

Applying for Legal Associate Membership involves two stages - an initial assessment and completion of a project and/or viva voce and a formal application for Legal Associate Membership subject to passing the viva.

A candidate applying for Legal Associate Membership at the time of the initial assessment must be able to demonstrate;

  • that he/she is a qualified legal practitioner, i.e. a solicitor, advocate or barrister, AND
  • that he/she has at least three years of experience in planning law.

The Institute has endeavoured to make the requirements for Legal Associate Membership compatible with those for selection to the Law Society’s Planning Panel. Therefore, an applicant who is already a member of the Law Society's Planning Panel need not do the project before undertaking the viva.

An applicant must be engaged in aspects of planning law for approximately 300 hours per annum, 900 hours over the three-year period. The three years of experience should be continuous. The project is intended to demonstrate that the applicant has had specialist experience and has attained a standard of proficiency which enables him/her to give sound advice in planning law.
