Technical Membership of the RTPI recognises the contribution made by skilled and experienced enforcement, technical or administrative staff to planning. Upon election to this class, members can use the designation TechRTPI after their names.
Applicants for Technical Membership should not be eligible to apply for Chartered Membership of the Institute. There are two routes to achieving Technical Membership, Routes 1 and 2.
Route 1
This route is suitable for individuals with a recognised academic qualification in spatial planning.
Academic requirement of Route 1
Applicants must have completed;
- a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Diploma (HND) in Planning (formerly Land Administration - Planning), OR
- the National/Scottish Vocational Qualification (N/SVQ) at Level 3 in Built Environment Development and Control (Planning Conservation and Building Control) (formerly Town Planning Support), OR

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS AND PROVISION FOR TECHNICAL MEMBERSHIP (ROUTE 1)
Practical experience requirement of Route 1
Applicants must be able to demonstrate;
- at least two years of relevant experience in spatial planning, one year of which must have been gained post-qualification, OR
- at least four years of relevant experience prior to qualifying.
Route 2
This route is suitable for applicants who do not have recognised academic qualifications as listed above, but can demonstrate at least ten years of relevant experience in an enforcement, technical or administrative role.
Applicants have to complete a project approved by the Institute. The project can take a number of forms, reflecting the variety of planning roles. It may simply be a piece of written work; for example, a case study describing and analysing a particular problem and suggesting solutions or demonstrating how it was solved or, it may be a portfolio of work, including maps and/or drawings with a written commentary, explaining the context and purpose of the items in the portfolio. The project may involve a specialist field, but must be set in a spatial planning context and the applicant's role in the work must be clearly identified.
Applicants who satisfy the practical experience requirement for Route 2 can apply for Technical Membership without having to complete a project if they have successfully completed the Certificate in Planning Enforcement offered by Trevor Roberts Associates.
