Chartered Fellow

01-Dec-11

The purpose of the Fellowship class is to recognise Chartered Members of the Institute who have made a notable contribution to the profession. Fellows can use the designation FRTPI after their names.

An applicant wishing to transfer from Membership to Fellowship must have been a Chartered Member for at least five years and must at the time of application satisfy the Trustees of the Institute that he/she has;

  • a high level of competence in spatial planning and the necessary breadth and/or depth of experience to complement it, AND
  • made a distinctive and innovative personal contribution to the profession to further the art and science of spatial planning.

When deciding whether an applicant has achieved a high level of competence in spatial planning, consideration will be given to the type and extent of experience and the level of professional responsibility. All types of professional activity, including public and private practice, teaching and research will be taken into account. An applicant who has specialised in a particular area of spatial planning will be expected to demonstrate greater depth of experience than an applicant with experience in several aspects of planning.

When deciding whether an applicant has made a major contribution to spatial planning, consideration will be given to how he/she has contributed to the development of planning theory and practice and the recognition he/she has achieved within the profession.
