Fossil Fuels National Policy Statement

09-Nov-09

The Government has released its draft Fossil Fuels National Policy Statement (EN-2) on the 9th November 2009.

The draft National Policy Statement identified fossil fuel generating stations as playing a vital role in providing reliable electricity supplies as part of a raft of energy measures to secure and diverse the energy mix as the UK makes the transition to a low carbon economy. As part of the transition towards a secure decarbonised electricity system, the move to clean coal through the development and deployment of carbon capture and storage technologies offers the opportunity to reduce fossil fuel generating stations’ carbon emissions by around 90%. It is Government policy that all new coal-fired
generating stations should be required to capture and store the carbon emissions from a substantial proportion of their capacity. The Government plans to provide funding for up to four coal CCS demonstration projects, to be operational by 2020, and it is expected that new conventional coal-fired generating stations consented under the policy framework described in the Overarching Energy NPS will retrofit CCS to their full capacity by 2025.
