West of Scotland Chapter and University of Glasgow Student Awards

John Walls reports

At a gathering of students at the Department of Urban Studies, University of Glasgow on 6 October, James Spence Watson, Convener of the West of Scotland Chapter, congratulated a number of students on their spatial planning projects in Dalmarnock.  The members of the winning team were Lindsey Brown, Craig Martin and Adam Montgomery.  The two runner-up teams received commendations: they were Gary Bruce, Alex Forsyth and Claire Quinn; and Michael Kordas, Joanna Stewart and Dong Zhang. The students are all doing the Glasgow University’s MSc Programme in Real Estate, Planning and Regeneration.

The Chapter thought the winning report was well-structured, had a clear and concise vision, set out key aims and objectives and provided clear reasoning for each stage in the implementation section. It also recognised the need for effective community consultation. More generally the project demonstrated the ability to think strategically, and finally the report demonstrated creative ideas which were realistic and could be phased over the time period envisaged.

This Award is a new venture for both the Chapter and the University and has the following aims:

  • fostering an enhanced relationship between the Chapter and University
  • promoting the RTPI and planning as an attractive career option
  • increasing the profile of planning
  • providing a vehicle to promote innovative ideas in urban planning and design.

A parallel Award scheme has been created for the University of Strathclyde - see the report in Scottish Planner August 2009 (p.16). Members may recollect this took place in June. The Chapter welcomed Dr Libby Porter’s support in making the Student Award Scheme possible.
