The Vision: Action-Oriented Planning
05-Jan-07
Successful spatial planning is action oriented...
Spatial planning is driven by the twin activities of mediating space and making of place. For these activities to be successful, plans must be implemented.
It is not sufficient to make 'beautiful plans', if these are not capable of effective implementation. Nor will plans be implemented by regulatory action, without the broader consent and commitment of a wide range of partners.
Spatial planners need to understand the social, economic and environmental resources necessary to enable plans to be implemented. They need skills in the assembly and management of projects and partnerships.
Monitoring is also a critical component of implementation as it provides feedback to the plan making and revision processes. Effective monitoring is necessary to steer and continuously improve plans, to ensure that implementation is appropriate,

And what about the future?

Action is the main front on which our challenge document proposes change to the New Vision.
The Agenda for Action in the New Vision should be extended to promote sustainable development, to tackle climate change and to secure global survival. The RTPI should establish itself as the voice on spatial planning and become a “campaigning profession”. It should strengthen its commitment to community engagement, particularly through Planning Aid, and its programme of consultation across a wide range of public, private and voluntary partners. It should also consolidate its position as the primary professional and academic accreditation body for a wide range of practitioners.
An Action Plan is proposed for the RTPI, to guide its own actions and the actions you could take. Click here for more information about its proposed contents.
