Planning to live with climate change
05-Dec-11
All parts of the RTPI are involved in delivering its Planning to live with climate change initiative. The RTPI has set out Seven Commitments on Climate Change (pdf, 2.2 mb).
What is the Network doing?
Les Huckfield and Richard Garland are the Regeneration Network Climate Change Champions. The kind of things they are doing include providing examples of good practice and items for the website, writing articles for the network bulletin, RTPI News and other media publications, and signposting members to relevant events.
To encourage discussion within network members, Les has written an initial note on renewables development, planning gain and community benefit (pdf, 406 kb), What future for regeneration and climate change policies? (pdf, 374 kb) and The future is local - but is it also green? (pdf, 585 kb). (Documents available to network members - log in required)

Energising communities: learning from area-based energy efficiency projects in Scotland (pdf, 1.1 mb) The combination of rising energy prices and the need to reduce climate change emissions emphasises the need for government, the energy industry and consumers to take a stronger approach towards energy efficiency. Area-based approaches to energy efficiency, offering targeted services at community level, are increasingly seen as one important part of the solution.

Community power empowers (pdf, 1.6 mb) This Urban Forum report looks at successful community-led and municipal-led renewable energy projects, and identifies a number of common characteristics as drivers to making the projects happen or creating the necessary culture change to enable innovation to thrive.
Planning for Climate Change: guidance and model policies for local authorities This guide is designed primarily for local authorities and new Local Enterprise Partnerships who want both to tackle climate change and to reap the benefits that renewable energy and effective adaptation can bring.

Impacts of climate change on disadvantaged UK coastal communities This JRF study explores the vulnerability to climate change of communities in disadvantaged coastal areas of the UK, combines four case studies with a literature review and analysis of likely impacts, interviews and a workshop and provides recommendations for improving their resilience to climate change as part of national and local adaptation responses.
