Climate Change is probably single largest global challenge faced by us all. To do its part, the RTPI has launched Planning to Live with Climate Change - Our 7 Commitments, which are:

1 Promote behavioural change
2 Adapt existing places
3 Work towards responsive legislation and policies
4 Improve current practice
5 Celebrate best practice
6 Compile a compendium of best practice
7 Develop climate change education and skills.

Networks Climate Change Champion Initiative

To help achieve these aims, the RTPI Networks have established Climate Change Champions. They play an important role within their own Network, exploring and providing good practice examples and promoting discussion amongst Network Members. John Hack is the Development Planning Network climate change champion.

If you would like to get in touch with the Network Manager and John then please e-mail us.

Network Discussion: LDFs, Regional Strategies and Climate Change

Following on from an article prepared by John Hack on LDFs and Climate Change (Planning, 26th February 2010) below we have set out a few questions aimed at those preparing and contributing to LDFs and regional strategies. These are based broadly on the 7 Commitments set out above.

If you would like to respond to one or more of the questions below, please e-mail the Network Manager.

1. To what extent do your alternatives:

           -  reduce the demands for energy in major sectors?
           -  reduce the consumption of natural resources (including land)?
           -  encourage a shift to renewable and local energy generation?

2. How will your planning policies and delivery mechanisms ensure existing buildings and places use less resources?

3. What contribution is your authority making to:
           -  increasing knowledge of climate change & the resource issues of different alternatives?
          -  working with others to increase knowledge of likely effects?

4. How are you evaluating the likely effects of all the policies over the plan period on emissions and resources?

5. How are you learning from others (at all spatial levels) on the considerations that should be included in preparing a sound plan that meets the statutory requirement to contribute to the mitigation and adaptation to climate change?

6. Examples and case studies:

Do you have examples or case studies showing best current practice in spatial planning and decision making that might assist others?

7. How are you developing staff and educating councillors and stakeholders in their understanding of climate change and resource issues and implications?

Please e-mail responses to the Network Manager. We look forward to your contributions.
