Continuing Professional Development (CPD) - an introduction
05-Aug-10
The RTPI’s definition of CPD is “The systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of knowledge and skill and the development of personal qualities necessary for the execution of professional and technical duties throughout the practitioner’s working life.”
CPD is an ongoing process of learning through planning and reflection. It is the commitment that a practitioner makes to develop their expertise. It is also gives you the opportunity to assess your professional priorities for your own career development.
The crucial difference between CPD and training is the time you take to plan and reflect on your learning. This is a powerful tool which helps you to learn more from your CPD activities.
Chartered, Legal, Associate, Technical and Licentiate RTPI members make a commitment, through the Code of Professional Conduct (Clause 1(a) and Supplementary Regulations A1), to maintain and develop their expertise through CPD.
