Community Engagement training for planners

Cymraeg

In mid-June Planning Aid Wales will be delivering five regional training events for planners on engagement and participation techniques.

Funded by RTPI Cymru and the Welsh Assembly Government and delivered in conjunction with BDOR Ltd, experts in participation training, the courses will aim to create the conditions of understanding, clarity, openness and empathy needed for effective public engagement in planning.  The training will also provide a range of practical tools for planners wanting to engage communities more effectively.

The courses will cover the following topics:

  • New duties to involve and engage.
  • Clarification of terms (‘consult’, ‘involve / participate’ and ‘engage’) and the merits of each in different planning circumstances.
  • Devising transparent participation processes which are effective and realistic.
  • Establishing open, inclusive and regular routes of communication.
  • Understanding community engagement issues through role play group activities and good practice scenarios.
  • Providing the confidence, skills and techniques necessary for effective community engagement.

To allow for planners from all of Wales to access the course, five one-day courses will be held in the following locations on the following dates:

  • 17th June: St. Asaph, Denbighshire
  • 18th June: Gwynedd Council Offices, Shirehall Street, Caernarfon
  • 19th June: BBNPA offices, Brecon
  • 22nd June: Cardiff University
  • 23rd June: County Hall, Swansea

Each course will be held between 9.30am and 4.30pm and includes lunch.

Whilst the courses will focus on local authority planning issues, planners from other sectors are also welcome.  The courses cost just £40.
