Governments undertake a wide range of policy development work. The RTPI policy team uses the policy and research priorities and the policy and practice strategy to help to decide which to respond to.

RTPI Members can contribute their expertise to the development of new policy positions to be used in policy responses.

Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management: Development of a National Strategy for Wales
The National Strategy is intended to set out the Assembly’s policies on flood and coastal erosion risk management. It should also establish a delivery framework that meets the needs of Wales both now and in the future.
This consultation is the first step in producing a National Strategy for Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management in Wales. It poses questions about the objectives they should set, the actions they should take and the way they should fund flood and coastal erosion risk management. It also includes information on the roles and responsibilities of the Risk Management Authorities.

Consultation Paper on the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010
The Regulations aim to reduce and prevent pollution of the aquatic environment from any inadequate above ground oil storage facilities. The Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) (WFD) requires that for diffuse sources liable to cause pollution measures are put in place to prevent or control the input of pollutants. It also requires that all surface waters and groundwater must attain “good” status by 2015.

New Policy Document for Planning Obligations: Consultation

In its final form, this policy document is intended to replace the Government's current policy contained in Circular 5/05: Planning Obligations, and form an annex to the new Development Management Planning Policy Statement on which the Government launched a consultation on 21 December 2009. In the meantime, the policy in Circular 5/05 continues to apply.

The Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act 2009 introduces Multi-Area Agreements (MAAs) with duties, which impose similar duties to co-operate as those which apply to Local Area Agreements (LAAs).This consultation asks whether the guidance adequately explains the key principles and requirements of the underpinning legislation.

Consultation on secondary legislation for Marine Licensing Enforcement – Monetary Penalties and Appeals Against Statutory Notice
This consultation seeks your views on proposals for the enforcement of the new marine licensing system enabled by the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009, which will apply only where the Secretary of State (or delegated authority) is the licensing authority. It proposes the introduction of a system of monetary penalties for licensing offences and a mechanism for people to appeal against statutory notices.

Planning Policy Statement: Planning for a Low Carbon Future in a Changing Climate
This consultation seeks views on the proposal to combine and update existing planning policy on climate change and renewable energy from two documents into one. Building from current approaches, the new policy reflects the latest legislative and policy context. The Planning Policy Statement (PPS) will be a supplement to Planning Policy Statement 1: Delivering Sustainable Development (PPS1).

PRE-CONSULTATION ON THE DRAFT UK MARINE POLICY STATEMENT: A paper for discussion
The MPS will set out the policies that will contribute to the achievement of sustainable development in the United Kingdom
marine area. It will provide the framework for preparing marine plans and taking decisions that affect the marine environment.
This pre-consultation paper invites your views on proposals for the MPS and supporting outline Impact Assessment. It will form the basis for informal discussions with interested parties on the development of the draft MPS, prior to a formal consultation in summer 2010.

Where relevant, an internal closing date is provided next to each consultation. This indicates that the consulting body has set a deadline for responses. The internal closing date enables the RTPI policy team to draft a coordinated response in time to meet the response deadline: please try to comment inside the internal consultation period.

RTPI nations and regions, networks and associations have strong roles in policy development. Follow these links to make contact and offer to help. The RTPI policy team is preparing short guides that explain how it works in partnership with nations, regions, networks and associations.
