ESPON 2006 Publications
For an overview of ESPON 2006 findings the Final Synthesis Report and the ESPON Atlas are a good starting point. The printed version of these and other reports can be obtained from the UK ESPON Contact Point. Please e-mail your details to research@rtpi.org.uk if you would like any of them.
Key Reports
The Synthesis Report, “Territory matters for competitiveness and cohesion”, was published in 2006. It is around 100 pages and includes several maps and also inset boxes highlighting examples. It is available in hard copy and on CD. [Download report]
The ESPON Atlas, also published in 2006, and again available in hard copy and on CD, has more maps. It largely focuses on interpretation of the various maps. It is colourful and readable and less than 100 pages long. [Download Atlas]
Scenarios on the Territorial Future of Europe is the product of ESPON project 3.2. The project team drew on findings form other ESPON projects to produce a synthesis. There are 3 main scenarios reviewed for the period up to 2030 – trend; cohesion-oriented; and competitiveness-oriented. It is worth looking at what happens to Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland on these different scenarios. [Download report]
Europe in the World is the only ESPON 2006 project that really looked beyond the territory of Europe and placed it in a global context. [Download report]
More reports
Each ESPON 2006 project produced a final report. These tend to be very long. All can be accessed on the ESPON EU website, though they are big files and you really need broadband to download any of them. You also need to print them in colour to be able to interpret the maps.
ESPON in teaching
The ESPON UK Network is keen to promote the use of ESPON in teaching. Free copies of many of the ESPON publications are available on request.
