A quote from the winner....

Ali Clabburn, founder and MD of liftshare, said: “To be awarded by the RTPI for our contribution to sustainable transport is a real privilege. Our work is often commended for being green and innovative, but our impact on transport at a local level is really profound in many areas, and we are delighted to see the transport planning aspect of our service recognised and held up as best practice.”

About the project

Liftshare is a pioneering social enterprise that helps individuals to travel more sustainably by sharing their journeys. Liftshare’s online network matches people with similar journeys so they can travel better together – saving money, cutting their carbon footprint, having fun and making the world a better place. Liftshare.com is completely free to use and makes it easy to share any car journey.

Over 310,000 people have already joined the liftshare network meaning every day around 40,000 fewer car trips are made. The scheme funds itself by helping businesses and communities set up their own online journey-matching tools to encourage local car-sharing and more sustainable mobility within local communities. The team then provides ongoing support services to help them market and monitor their scheme effectively. Liftshare are unique in being totally focused on helping people, rather than on the financial reward – and people recognise this genuine dedication to a greater goal.

The liftshare system, which winner and Ali Clabburn founded in 1998, was the first of its kind anywhere in the world. Before its launch, the concept of car-sharing itself was relatively unexplored in the UK. They are thus pioneers in the field, and their involvement with US markets has indicated that our innovative technology far out-performs theirs and still inspires others to try similar schemes.
