Full Seminar details

A series of free seminars is being run to support the dissemination of the Department for Transport (DfT) and the Department of Communities and Local Government (CLG) guidelines Delivering Travel Plans through the Planning Process, published in April 2009.

A 1 hour key decision makers briefing will begin each event, aimed at senior planning and transport professionals, such as Heads of Planning, Transport or Environment and at key politicians and Councillors.

This will be followed by a structured seminar for practitioners from both the planning and transport fields, which will explore the detail of best practice and effective implementation. The day will include interactive workshops and one to one drop in clinics with experts and speakers.

The guidelines are designed to help support the effective securing, monitoring and performance of travel plans via the spatial planning process. Supporting the whole ethos of placemaking, the document not only provides practical guidance to support pre-application negotiations through to delivery of planning permission, but also provides helpful guidance that can be translated into LDF, Area Action Plan and Supplementary Planning documents at a local level.

The guidelines will also help all of those involved in creating, implementing and realising the benefits of travel plans, including local authority planners, transport and travel plan officers, developers and consultants. Travel plans can be a key tool in achieving national, regional and local objectives to manage the demand for movement, improve accessibility and address CO2 emissions from transport. They can also contribute to the delivery of other objectives, such as health, air quality and quality of life. The full travel plan guidelines document is intended to set out good practice actions that can be taken to produce high quality, robust travel plans. The suggested steps are recommendations only, and are not additions to Government policy or law on travel plans.

If you wish to find out more about the guidelines, the summary and main documents can be found on the DfT website at: travel plans

The seminars are a key opportunity for those involved in any aspect of travel planning to understand how the guidance can assist and improve the delivery of local travel plans. They will be delivered by a partnership of industry experts including MVA, Mouchel, The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation and the Royal Town Planning Institute on behalf of the DfT and CLG.

Each seminar will be introduced by the DfT and CLG and will include speaking slots from the main authors of the guidance, Lynda Addison and Sheila Holden and other travel planning experts, with case study examples of locally sourced development control, local authority process and travel plans. The day will include interactive workshops aimed at putting the policy into practice and best practice examples showing effective implementation of the guidance in varying settings.

Three free seminars will be:

  • 2nd March – Devon County Hall, Topsham Road, Exeter, EX2 4QD
  • 9th March – Merseytravel, 24 Hatton Garden, Liverpool, L3 2AN
  • 16th March – Days Hotel Nottingham, 17-31 Wollaton Street, NG1 5F

These guidelines have the potential to provide a valuable approach to transport and planning for the future and we would encourage you to ensure that your authority is represented at one of these seminars. You can send separate delegates to the pre-seminar briefing and the full seminar. However, places are limited so please book as soon as possible. Places can be booked in the Events section of the CIHT website: IHT Events.
