Employing Chartered Planners is the best way to ensure the competence and professionalism of your employees.

RTPI Chartered Planners are:

  • Highly qualified – having had their education and initial experience approved by the RTPI
  • Committed to maintaining their knowledge and skill – through undertaking continuing professional development (CPD)
  • Highly professional – committed to the RTPI’s Code of Professional Conduct
  • Supported by the RTPI – through a range of benefits designed to help them develop their knowledge and skill and build professional networks.

Support from the RTPI

A range of RTPI membership benefits and services, available to RTPI Members of all classes, could help your employees and your organisation as a whole to gain that professional edge. RTPI Members can access:

  • Cutting edge information and knowledge – discounts on Planning Theory and Practice journal
  • Professional development at your fingertips – download modules from www.planningmatters.co.uk.
  • Quality conferences, workshops and masterclasses – discounts from RTPI Conferences
  • Flagship events – with discounts including the annual Planning Convention
  • Volunteering opportunities – developing skills and knowledge through volunteering for Planning Aid, with full training provided
  • Workplace support – the Planners in the Workplace initiative provides guidance and support on workplace issues, from management and leadership to professional conduct. An employment law helpline also provides free, confidential advice to RTPI Members
  • Professional development, events and networking opportunities – subject-led through online RTPI Networks, or locally through RTPI Regions and Nations

What’s new in education, membership and professional development?

Since the RTPI’s Education Commission in 2003 there have been significant changes in the way in which the RTPI operates its education and membership policies. Find our more from the RTPI’s Education and Lifelong Learning pages, or see some of the highlighted initiatives below:

RTPI Learning Partners – do you want to gain that professional edge by demonstrating your commitment to high professional standards to employees, clients, stakeholders and the public? For the first time, the RTPI has introduced a form of accreditation for employers who can demonstrate that they are supporting training and professional development for their planning employees.

If your organisation is supportive of professional development activity, this is a great opportunity to promote your commitment to high professional standards across the profession. It is also a great way to ensure you are kept up to date with any changes to education, membership, lifelong learning or CPD policy, including any new offers or initiatives.

Education Review – the RTPI is mid-way through a review into its progress towards the Education Commission’s recommendations, including reviewing its policy statement on initial planning education. The first round of consultation has now closed, but you can access those documents and future consultations from the Education Review pages.

Introduction of Associate Membership – a new way for employees without an accredited qualification to gain affiliation to the RTPI and, in the future, a route from Associate to Chartered Membership (currently under development). Find out more about Associate Membership.
