Place-shaping
GURU has an international reputation in researching and working with communities (rural and urban) to help them shape the future of their communities, and in advising Governments on policies to support such place-shaping. One such recent example has been The Committee of Inquiry on Crofting, chaired by Professor Mark Shucksmith of GURU, which presented its report and recommendations to the Scottish Government in May. The Report has wide implications for how we think about land use and land reform in the UK more broadly, considering as it does issues of land taxation, governance of common land, affordable housing, and tenant rights, as well as the wider issues of sustaining and enhancing the population; improving economic vitality; safeguarding landscape and biodiversity; and sustaining cultural diversity.
The UN in Newcastle
The United Nations Global Research Network on Human Settlements annual meeting is being hosted by GURU in September. This will bring leading experts from around the World to present and debate the content of the 2009 Global Report on Human Settlements, which is on the subject of Urban Planning. It is a great honour for GURU and Newcastle University to host this event which is convened by Graham Tipple, currently Vice-Chair of the Network and GURU’s theme leader for its work on Cities and International Development.
