SEQM sponsored the 2nd event of the year for the reformed North East Young Planners with a great night at the dogs. The event, held on Thursday 21st February 2008, attracted a large amount of interest. Unfortunately due to the stadium rules only 30 places were available which were filled in a short space of time. 30 young planners from a varied background tucked into either chicken or scampi and chips, and a number of drinks of choice. After filling up, everyone took the opportunity to place some sometimes daring bets on number of intriguingly named dogs, with varying success, or in some cases none at all. The event allowed for a varied group of young planners to get to know each other against an informal background The night was greatly enjoyed by all that attended and has set a great momentum for future events, which include an informal drinks evening, a summer seminar series and leading to an end of year Ceilidh . The North east Young Planners would like to thank SEQM for their support and for helping to make the night such a success.

On Thursday 6th March Newcastle Universities Planning Society in conjunction with the North East Young Planners Network held a ‘Planning Idol’ event at Newcastle University Union. Five planning professionals from different backgrounds, including Local Authority, Consultancy, Rural Planning, and Planning Aid, were invited to give a presentation to planning and geography students promoting their sector of planning and compete for the title of ‘North East Planning Idol 2008’. The event gave the students an opportunity to learn about the highs and lows of a career within the different areas of planning and consider what their own future role in planning might be. A big thank you to the RTPI NE for sponsoring the event and the speakers; David Abercrombie, Chris Anderson, Aidan Booth, Martin Craddock, Clodagh McGuirk and John Sturzaker, who gave up their evening to give the students a fabulous introduction to the world of Planning.

The North East Young Planners is currently run by a Steering Group made up of volunteers, and through the events mentioned above aims to bridge the gap between students and young professionals in the Planning world. The events that have been held so far have been very informal and have given those who attended an opportunity to meet new people in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Further details on future events and how to get involved can be found on the RTPI website at www.rtpi.org/north_east_young_planners/. A North East young planners group had also been set up on Facebook. If you would like to get involved, or learn more please e-mail: northeast.ypg@rtpi.org.uk.
