POLICY WORK IN WALES

The Institute in Wales responds to a range of consultations conducted by the Welsh Government, the National Assembly for Wales' Committees and other national bodies, and produces position papers on policy issues relevant to Wales, as well as considering UK proposals from a Wales' perspective.
The RTPI Cymru responses and policy work is the responsibility of its Policy and Research Forum, supported by the National Director.
CURRENT POLICY CONSULTATIONS
RTPI Cymru is asked to comment on various consultations documents. Members' views on current consultations are always welcome and should be submitted by e-mail to Roisin Willmott, National Director, or by post to the RTPI Cymru Office.

Meeting the Housing Challenge: Building a consensus for action
The Welsh Government has invited views on housing issues to help prepare a new Housing Bill.
The details of the call for evidence can be found on the Welsh Government's website. The closing date is 17 February 2012. The deadline for submitting comments to RTPI Cymru has now passed.
Revision of Planning Policy Wales Chapter 7 Supporting the Economy
The Welsh Government are revising planning policy for economic development to make sure that it can deliver their aspirations for economic recovery in Wales. This work has been informed by a research report, Planning for Sustainable Economic Renewal by Roger Tym and Partners in association with Asbri Planning.
They also want views on the structure of a new Technical Advice Note (TAN) which will be publish later this year. A more detailed separate consultation will be undertaken on the TAN later in 2012. At this stage they want to know if the structure of the TAN is thought to be appropriate.
The details of the consultation can be found on the Welsh Government's website. The closing date is 5 March 2012. The deadline for submitting comments to RTPI Cymru is 10 February.

Call for evidence: Ensuring the planning system delivers
As part of the evidence base for the Planning Bill due in 2013, an independent advisory group has been set up to review and consider the options on how to deliver the planning system in the future.
The review will look at, and make recommendations about:
- Options for future deliver of the planning system including a preferred approach;
- The legislation and policy guidance necessary to introduce the options and preferred approach;
- An assessment of the resources necessary to deliver the options and preferred approach – this will include staff numbers and costs; and
- Improvements that can be implemented quickly and easily.
- Views are invited on:
- The key policy objectives that the planning system should deliver;
- How can we deliver the planning system most effectively, and how can we measure it; and
- The current delivery mechanisms and institutional arrangements

RTPI Cymru held a series of discussion workshops with RTPI members in Wales during December and the views expressed at these were used by the Policy and Research Forum to inform the evidence submitted by RTPI Cymru. A strategic monitoring framework for the planning system: Measuring progress towards a sustainable Wales
The Welsh Government’s Sustainable Development Scheme One Wales: One Planet (2009) sets out their vision of a sustainable Wales. It identifies the planning system as one of four key themes that underpin their approach to delivering sustainable development in Wales. The consultation considered a strategic monitoring framework to measure the contribution the planning system makes to the vision of a sustainable Wales.
