About the network
16-Oct-07
The YPN is intended to be more a ‘club’ than a mailing list. It is active, and very much reliant on the voluntary input of members.
We have a steering group and a network manager, who work to an annual action plan, which members can find in the Resources section. In the same section, members can also read steering group minutes and the latest YPN monitoring report.
Aims and objectives
The aims and objectives of the YPN are shown below.
Assessment of Professional Competence (APC)
- to be seen as an informal source of advice and guidance for licentiate members when completing the APC
- to assist RTPI staff in producing material for those doing the APC.
Promotion
- to promote the role of young planners in the profession
- to promote young planners within the RTPI
- to promote planning as a profession to other young professionals (e.g. in allied professions).
Communication
- to edit a monthly young planners’ page for all young planners in Planning
- to carry out an annual survey of the YPN membership
- to contribute to the RTPI website YPN pages and to the weekly bulletin produced by the Network Manager (sent to all YPN members and available on the website)
- to be a source of information or contact details for young planner queries.
Liaison
- to liaise with RTPI regional and national young planners’ groups and with the young planner reps on the General Assembly and Executive Board
- to facilitate the sharing of knowledge between young planner reps in all regions and nations
- to provide practical assistance to regional young planner reps (e.g. by producing an event organisation toolkit)
- to support young planner reps to develop young planner activities in areas where little or none exists
- to build links with students and universities.
Conference
- to organise an annual, two-day young planners’ conference, in a different place each year
- to design a conference that will appeal to a broad range of delegates, focusing on topical regional issues and projects, and including social events.
