News from the Global Urban Research Unit at Newcastle University

In addition to several on-going research projects (see www.ncl.ac.uk/guru/research) GURU began a prestigious two year contract for the European Commission in December. The ‘Social Platform on Cities and Social Cohesion’ (Social Polis for short) will build up a network of researchers and stakeholders interested in Cities and Social Cohesion as a research topic, and develop a research agenda for a future EC call on this topic. More details can be found at: www.ncl.ac.uk/guru/ . The second stage will involve regional user groups (including advocacy groups, NGOs, government authorities, private sector actors etc) concerned with social cohesion/urban issues. We may be in touch!

A number of forthcoming events hosted by GURU may also be of interest to members including:
 Visiting Professors Leonora Rozee (Planning Inspectorate) and Phil Allmendinger (Reading University) are leading a debate on the ‘Future for the New Spatial Planning’ on February 11, 5-7pm. Refreshments provided, all welcome, but please inform Jill.Chamberlain if you are attending.
 GURU co-ordinates our host School of Architecture Planning and Landscape’s weekly seminar series, details at: www.ncl.ac.uk/GURU/ . Highlights in the Spring include: our own Prof Simin Davoudi on evidence-based planning (January 30th) and RTPI North/ APL’s John Sturzaker on planning and affordable rural housing (February 20th). Seminars take place 1-2pm in Exhibition Area, 4th floor, Claremont Tower.
