Commonwealth Association of Planners: Regional conference in Barbados

In June 2007, researchers from across the Caribbean met in Barbados for the CAP Regional Conference and Workshop on Re-shaping the Planning Agenda: Experiences of Small Island States, organised by the Barbados Town and Country Planning Society Barbados 25 - 27 June 2007.
Reverend Joseph Atherley, Minister of State in the Barbados Prime Minister's Office, gave the keynote address, stressing the importance of proper planning of land for economic development. He also announced that the Barbados government will promote 'an expanded and more aggressive programme to protect and preserve the coastline'. In her address, CAP President Christine Platt highlighted the need for effective planning to tackle threats from climate change, particularly to coastal settlements in small island states in the Commonwealth, while Richard Gill, CAP Vice-President for the Americas, and President of the Barbados Town and Country Planning Society emphasised the importance of tackling problems of transport and urban congestion.
The meeting was reported on the front pages of the main local Barbados newspapers, The Barbados Advocate and The Daily Nation.
