YOUNG PLANNERS' NETWORK FOR THE SOUTH WEST

The Young Planners Network was set up by the RTPI to provide a focus for all planning students, RTPI Student members and younger corporate members (under the age of 35) throughout the UK and Ireland. Each region (there are 12 in total) has a Young Planners Representative and James Holbrook has been the South West Representative since October 2006. One of his roles involves trying to organise a number of events in 2007/08 to facilitate networking within the region.

So far we have held a number of successful events in the South West including the following:

March 2007: An evening event held Bristol providing an overview of the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) for the South West and Tests of Soundness. This was a successful event with approximately 50 people attending the event which included refreshments in the Arup office atrium and presentations by Dr. Geoff Walker (UWE, Bristol) and Chris Stratford (Arup).

April 2007: An informal Networking Event sponsored by AndersElite held in the Berkeley Square Hotel, Bristol, attended by approximately 20 Young Planners from the public and private sector. Free drinks were provided as well as live music!

July 2007: An evening event held at Foot Ansteys offices in Exeter was attended by approximately 60 people and included an element of CPD with presentations from Karen Trickey (Foot Anstey), Ian Awcock (WSP) and Bernie Foulkes (LDA Design). The presentations were varied and informative, providing legal updates, outlining the new Manual for Streets and discussing Masterplanning using Millbay in Plymouth as the main case study. Following the presentations, delegates moved to a nearby Wine Bar where free drinks and nibbles were provided.

We are intending to hold further events in other parts of the region (i.e. Truro, Gloucester, Poole etc) and therefore if you consider that you may be able to help orgainse an event in your part of the region, or you may have views as to how the South West could become more active then please do not hesitate to contact James (james.holbrook@arup.com).

JOINING THE NETWORK

If you want to make an impact as a young planner and further your professional development, then why not join the YPN? The network is free to join and open to both RTPI and Non-RTPI members studying or working in Town Planning. Please see the following webpage for further details: (http://www.rtpi.org.uk/young_planners_network/).
Joining the network will enable you to receive a weekly email bulletin outlining events within the region. In addition all our events are promoted on the RTPI South West webpage, the Young Planners page in Planning and the RTPI South West ‘Branchout’ newsletter.
