GPN 1: GUIDELINES ON EFFECTIVE COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND CONSULTATION

RTPI (2005, revised July 2007)

Community participation is a critical component of spatial planning in the UK. These guidelines address many of the issues and challenges of effective community involvement and consultation within a statutory planning context.

Research and policy background

This publication was made possible due to Central Government funding of the RTPI’s Community Planning Project.

Discussions at the RTPI General Assembly and with the Planning with Communities Network have directly influenced the content of these guidelines which were first published in 2005. A major revision and case study development were undertaken in Spring 2007.

As well as being central to ongoing planning and governance reforms across the UK, effective community involvement is also an integral element of spatial planning as defined through the RTPI’s New Vision for Planning.
