This Conference, being organised with assistance from Colchester Borough Council, will respond to the continuing changes and challenges faced by town centres.  It will look at examples of how some town centres (large and small) in the East of England and beyond are meeting these challenges, developing initiatives and striving to achieve economic growth, and maintain a cultural and social focus whilst safeguarding their vitality and viability. 

Contributions will include specialists leading by example from a range of perspectives including:

  • The National Perspective - Problems and Issues" - Martyn Chase, Director, Stanhope - Ex President of the British Council for Shopping Centres (BCSC) and on the

    Government’s ‘Future of High Streets Forum’

  • “The Changing Face of the High Street: A Review of Retail and Town Centre Issues in Historic Areas June 2013" - Antony Rifkin (Partner of Allies and Morrison Urban Practitioners), author of this recent English Heritage report, will discuss its findings and lessons learnt
  • "The Changing High Street" - Jonny Birkett, East Team Towns Adviser, Association of Town & City Management (ATCM)
  • "Key Issues: Linking Policy and Practice for Town Centres" - Chris Wade, Chief Executive, Action for Market Towns
  • "National Trends and Context, and Insights for the Future" - Diane Wehrle, Retail Insights Director, Springboard
