Many graduate planners look to their workplace for support while preparing to become a Chartered Town Planner.  All Licentiates are encouraged to find a mentor to support them during this important period in their career.  This session aims to provide some background and tools for existing and prospective mentors and to help employers understand how they can best support their graduates achieve Chartered status.

The session will give ideas about structuring mentoring meetings, getting started on the process, setting rules and managing issues as well as some tips and traps. 

The session also provides a good overview of the APC for employers.  Information on how the RTPI supports its members will also be covered.


This session will provide:

  • A brief overview of the APC targeted at mentors and employers - its purpose, what it is testing and how the process is managed
  • The role of a mentor (or employer)
  • What makes a good mentor  
  • Understanding of what the assessors look for - Q&A with a current assessor
  • The PDP explained
  • Tips and traps for helping candidates through the process
  • An opportunity to provide feedback to the RTPI about the APC

Who should attend?

  • Employers of planning graduates
  • Mentors - current and prospective
  • Line managers and HR managers of planning organisations
  • Licentiates are welcome to attend with their mentor

Presented by RTPI staff, (a mentor and an assessor will be present where possible)

Expected duration: 1.5 hours
