The UK ESPON Contact Point is holding a half-day workshop in Newcastle on 23 November from 10am-1:45pm.

The workshop will discuss some of the challenges facing urban and rural England, as well as consider issues at national and cross-border level. A synthesis of ESPON project findings relating to urban development in England will be presented, highlighting projects such as TIGER, FOCI and CAEE. A session on rural challenges will highlight projects including PURR and EDORA, and be used to inform a synthesis report on ESPON findings in relation to rural England.

An RTPI event entitled Where next for strategic planning? is being held in the same venue in the afternoon (1:45pm-4:30pm). This event will focus on why strategic planning is needed, what the RTPI's Map for England initiative can do to enable policy making at this level, and how such planning is being dealt with in Scotland via strategic development plans. Delegates attending the morning session on ESPON may wish to stay for this.
