Water Efficiency Awards

Run by the Environment Agency, the Water Efficiency Awards were founded in 2000 and have been held every 2 years up to 2009, but are currently under review.

Water Efficiency Awards 2009

The 2009 Water Efficiency Awards recognised companies for their efforts to reduce water. There was a high calibre of entries with many organisations demonstrating commitment to improving water efficiency. This both saved money and reduced their carbon footprint.

The Awards were supported by Defra, Ofwat, Food and Drink Federation, Envirowise, Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), Business Link and Utility Week.

There were three main categories for businesses to enter:

  • Water Shout Award - celebrates great campaigns that change the way people use water;
  • Water Save Award - recognises practical measures that save water and money; and
  • Water Solve Award - acknowledges smart solutions for sustainable water use.

Water Efficiency Awards 2007

Barbara Young, Chief executive of the Environment Agency presented the 2007 awards in London on Tuesday 6th March.The RTPI is sponsor of the Public Sector category where the judges were looking for good water efficiency practice within the public sector.

The Award was made to Nottingham City Council.After consolidating its water bill, the Council discovered it was nearly 1m per annum.The Energy and Sustainability team worked with specialist companies to install leak detection and reduction devices in order to reduce water consumption across the Council.

The Commendation was awarded to the Energy Management Unit at Durham County Council.The Council continually strives to make users of its 500 buildings more aware of the need to conserve energy and water resources by fitting a range of water saving gadgets.The results over the 2 years are impressive. By reducing water consumption by 25% the Council has saved 290,000.

Congratulations to both Durham City Council and Nottingham City Council.
