Young Planner of the Year Award

This award is intended to seek out and acclaim the brightest planners in the early stages of their careers. This could be in planning practice, innovation, enterprise or philosophy.
We've had numerous requests for extensions and - because of our new, more flexible judging process - are happy to say we can accept entries up to 22 February. To confirm you're planning to submit an entry by the extended deadline, please email awards@rtpi.org.uk with your chosen category and the name of your project.

Prize

The winner will receive a place at the RTPI Planning Convention and at the Planning Summer School. They will also have the opportunity to speak at the annual RTPI Young Planners’ Conference, to be held in Leeds on 11 and 12 October 2013.

Eligibility

Entrants must be within the first ten years of post-qualification experience and be a current member of RTPI. Candidates can submit their own entries, and nominations will also be accepted from employers, colleagues, friends or relations or any member of the Institute who believes a young planner's particular contribution should be celebrated.

Criteria

The judges will seek to identify early career stage planners who can be promoted as role models. In evaluating the candidates, the judges will take the following into account, as appropriate:

  • the quality and reliability of their professional work
  • the range and variety of their planning experience
  • involvement with professional institutes, associates, networks, events, outreach work or relevant voluntary activity
  • their enthusiasm and originality of approach
  • their personal and teamworking skills
  • their commitment to continuing professional development
  • most importantly, the extent to which they serve as a role model for other young professionals.

Judging

The judges will review all entries received from candidates and determine a longlist. Short profiles of those candidates, taken from their entry submission, will be published on the RTPI's website and all members of the RTPI will be invited to vote for their preferred candidate to produce a shortlist. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to give a presentation to our panel of judges, who will decide on the overall winner.

The winner will be announced at the presentation of the RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence, to be held in central London in summer 2013. All entrants will be invited to book places for this event, but attendance is dependant on receiving a booking confirmation.

Entry process

The requirements are:

  • a citation of no more than 100 words from the candidate (or the nominator where an entry is being submitted on a candidate's behalf) explaining what the candidate has achieved and promises for the future;
  • a summary of no more than 400 words detailing the candidate's professional qualifications including universities attended, employment history etc.
  • a 100 word statement from the candidate explaining how they would promote planning as a professional activity should they win
  • the name of one referee who can vouch for the candidate.

To submit your entry:

Entries are free, submissions are open now and the extended closing date for entries is Friday 22 February 2013.
