Positioning urban scotland in its European context
Our next conference is taking place in Edinburgh on 30 March 2012 and will focus on urban development in Scotland in relation to findings from the ESPON Programme. Find out more about the event.
Creative people matter!
ESPON has produced its fifth volume in its Territorial Observations series. The new publication focuses on the creative workforce, and looks at trends and dynamics in European regions.
Polycentric development - a recipe for territorial cohesion?
Cliff Hague's recent blog considers polycentric development and the argument that it creates critical economic mass by combining efforts of smaller urban centres, while also delivering more balanced development between regions and more co-operative and functional urban-rural relations. But is it "past its sell-by date" or can the concept can be rescued?
Map of the Month
This month's map is taken from the ESPON Climate project, and shows the aggregate potential impact of climate change across Europe.
The potential impact of climate change varies widely across Europe. Large agglomerations and summer tourist resorts in Southern Europe are likely to be particularly negatively affected. Meanwhile, many Central, Eastern and Northern European regions will face virtually no negative impacts, and could even experience positive potential impacts.
Europe’s climate change vulnerability could act as a hindrance to the EU’s aims of territorial cohesion. Findings from the ESPON Climate project indicate that climate change would deepen existing socio-economic imbalances between Europe’s core and its Southern and Eastern regions, since economically lagging areas are often the most vulnerable to climate change.
Territorially differentiated adaptation strategies are therefore important, particularly for regions in the Mediterranean and South-East Europe. The most vulnerable regions are coastal regions with high populations and dependency on summer tourism; mountain regions with high dependence on winter and summer tourism; and agglomerations with high population densities where urban heat may become an issue. Given the regional diversity of climate change impacts, the challenge for local and ‘larger than local’ practitioners will be to exploit the opportunities that emerge through adaptation and mitigation to climate change. TIGER is our 'Project of the Month'
Researchers at the University of Reading are taking part in the ESPON project, TIGER (Territorial impact of globalisation for Europe and its regions). Find out more about the project.
Indicators of territorial cohesion
The ESPON project INTERCO is aiming to provide reliable indicators for measuring territorial cohesion and spatial challenges and opportunities. Cliff Hague from the UK ESPON Contact Point went to one of their recent workshops, and reported back on what was discussed. Read Cliff's report.
