Education
The RTPI works in partnership with Universities and Higher Education providers to develop and accredit planning qualifications which allow graduating students to progress towards Chartered Membership of the RTPI. These partnerships ensure that high standards are maintained through innovative, flexible and creative development of initial professional education to meet the challenges of the profession in creating sustainable communities. Planning is not a static discipline, and this is reflected by a continually evolving range of qualifications on offer.
The RTPI is committed to widening access to education from all sections of society and aims to promote equality and diversity in all aspects of planning education.
Accredited Qualifications
By choosing a planning qualification that is accredited by the RTPI, you are embarking on an approved course of study that has demonstrates that it equips graduates with a high level of knowledge and skill in spatial planning. Importantly, successfully completing this qualification can lead you through to Chartered Membership of the RTPI through the Assessment of Professional Competence.
Planning education encompasses a wide range of full time, part time and distance learning qualifications in combined, spatial and specialist planning programmes. Whether you want to begin as an undergraduate, postgraduate – or even earlier – you’ll find the right course for you at one of our partner higher education providers across the UK, Europe and Hong Kong.

Education Policy
In order to become a provider of accredited planning education, a University or other higher education provider must demonstrate that it can meet the criteria of an ‘effective planning school’. This examines the student experience and relationships that the planning school has with the profession. In addition, each qualification that is accredited must incorporate an established set of learning outcomes – so that all graduates of accredited qualifications have a core set of knowledge, skills and values. Find out more about the requirements that all accredited planning schools and qualifications must meet from the Policy Statement on initial Planning Education.
Education Providers
The RTPI welcomes approaches from new providers seeking to offer accredited planning education. Find out more about offering accredited qualifications.
For established providers of planning education, continuing accreditation is overseen by a partnership arrangement between the RTPI, the University, and local employers, known as Partnership Boards. Find out more about Partnership Boards.
