Resources for schools

Planning can be used to teach many aspects of the school curriculum. This section includes teaching resources that introduce young people to planning and planning-related issues.

Planning is a rich and varied subject and there is considerable scope to incorporate planning and planning-related issues in both primary and secondary level education.

The geography curriculum (key stages 1-5) provides the greatest scope to explore planning-related topics and materials, but the subjects of citizenship, history, design, politics, and science, amongst others, all relate to planning.

Planning Resources for Schools: Key Stages 1 and 2

RTPI Cymru has developed materials to promote an awareness of planning to young people. These materials have been written in line with key stage 1 and 2 National Curriculum for geography:

Planning Resources for Schools: Key Stages 3, 4 and 5

Education for Sustainable Development: A Manual for Schools has been developed by the Education for Sustainable Development Panel which comprised practicing planners with an interest and considerable experience of working with schools, teachers, other professionals and agencies. It is designed to support the teaching of sustainable development, community planning and citizenship for 11-19 year olds.

This document has a companion document, the Manual for Planners.

In 2002 the Southern Branch (now incorporated into South East Region) of the RTPI produced Plan your Planet. This publication is designed to assist teachers and school children in the understanding of sustainable development by linking personal choice with the development that results and the environmental impact that it has. The material can also help in the teaching of geography and citizenship. It includes information about the planning system and covers aspects of environmental education and sustainable development. For further information please email the South East Region.
