The Urban Research Group undertakes planning research in four themes: housing and neighbourhoods; governance and sustainability; international planning; and the night-time economy. Research projects include a study of social sustainability in urban areas, a review of mixed tenure housing developments and an investigation of planning and development in the Thames Gateway.

Sub-groups within the Urban Research Group include:

The Sustainable Communities Research Group. The group focuses on the design and development of mixed income and mixed tenure housing areas.

The Centre for Urban and Regional Governance. This group is concerned with the interface between cities and regions.

Max Lock Centre. Research is carried out on spatial planning for sustainable development, disaster risk reduction, poverty reduction in developing countries and local economic development.
