Current Planning Research at the University of Ulster
Planning research is carried out by the Built Environment Research Institute (BERI). The Institute employs over 50 members of staff and focuses on a number of subject areas. The Centre for Research on Property and Planning (RPP) is divided into five groups: regeneration; property valuation and taxation; housing; transportation and spatial planning; and globalisation and emerging markets.
The Regeneration sub-group focuses on improving transparency in regeneration investment and identification and removal of barriers to private sector investment in regeneration. Recent research has improved understanding of the investment needs of institutional investors and illustrated the potential for fiscal measures to attract investment into regeneration.
The Property Tax sub-group looks at property tax systems in a number of countries. Research includes an examination of options for a capital value system, a review of property tax in Kosovo and the provision of advice on the modernisation of Uganda's Rating System.
Research carried out by the Housing sub-group includes studies of future housing needs, the role of co-ownership and the resale performance of former Housing Executive property.
Research undertaken by the Transportation and Spatial Planning sub-group focuses on transboundary issues of accessibility, social justice and social exclusion.
The Globalisation and Emerging Markets group researches issues of bank lending criteria for development projects and finance and investment in Middle Eastern countries.
