Current Planning Research at the University of the West of England, Bristol
The University of the West of England's Department of Planning and Architecture employs nearly 70 members of staff with diverse interests. Both research and teaching are based on the principles of environmental, social and economic sustainability, and staff aim to contribute to the national objective of creating of sustainable communities.
Research is carried out in three research centres, with specific areas of research interest:
Centre for Sustainable Planning and Environments (SPE)
SPE's aim is to further understanding of what sustainable places are, and the processes involved in achieving them (via, for example, planning and urban design). The Centre seeks to provide research evidence at different scales from the neighbourhood to the region, and to understand the social construction of urban problems and solutions.
Centre for Transport and Society (CTS)
The aim of CTS is to improve and promote understanding of the inherent links between lifestyles and personal travel in the context of continuing social and technological change.
WHO Collaborating Centre for Healthy Cities
The WHO Collaborating Centre promotes healthy and sustainable settlements through research, teaching, consultancy, knowledge exchange and publication. The Centre works with other academics and practitioners from across the built environment and public health spectrum to research and support the integration of inter-disciplinary solutions to creating healthier places.
