The Department of Planning is part of the School of the Built Environment and employs over 60 teaching, administrative, technical and research staff. Research is undertaken by three Groups and forms a significant part of the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development (OISD).
The Impact Assessment Group focuses on issues such as EIA procedures, environmental policy, climate change and sustainable urban economic development. Recent research includes socio-economic impact assessments for the offshore wind industry and adaptation strategies for climate change in the built environment.
The Spatial Planning Group is concerned with Planning Thought and Governance, Economic Development Innovation and Regeneration, and Accessibility Transportation and Migration. Current research includes:
Understanding Walking and Cycling
The project is being undertaken in partnership with Lancaster University and the University of Leeds. It aims to develop an understanding of the ways in which individuals make decisions regarding how they travel in urban areas and inform planners and policy-makers so that more sustainable travel practices can be promoted.
The Urban Design Group is concerned with issues such as urban morphology, townscape appraisal, masterplanning and conservation. Current projects are dealing with the design of sustainable cities and social housing.
