Current Planning Research at Birmingham City University

The School of Property, Construction and Planning is part of the Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment. Research within the Faculty is carried out by three Research Centres.

The Centre for Environment and Society Research (CESR) is particularly interested in enhancing the understanding of how environmental change affects society. Current projects include:

Managing change at the rural-urban fringe (RELU). The project seeks to inform policy and practice regarding the management of environmental change in the rural-urban fringe.

Post-war reconstruction and re-planning. The study explores issues such as the agencies involved in reconstruction, the costs of reconstruction planning and how ideas of urban design and conservation have been incorporated in reconstruction plans.

Spatial Planning. Since the introduction of the term 'spatial planning' it is suggested that a communications gap has developed between central Government and local-level practitioners. Researchers at CESR are working on critiques of spatial planning and its implementation which has been subject to further change since the election of the coalition Government.
