Mid Sussex has a population of approximately 129,000 and is located within the County of West Sussex . It covers an area of some 33,400 hectares (approximately 128 square miles) and includes the three main towns of East Grinstead, Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath, set within a predominantly rural area with scattered villages and hamlets. Over half of the District is located within either the High Weald AONB or South Downs AONB. The Government has recently announced its intention to designate The South Downs as a National Park. The District is rich in heritage having over a 1,000 Listed Buildings and 36 Conservation Areas
The Development Control teams and Planning Policy team have recently merged to form a single Planning Services division to promote closer working and the introduction of Development Management principles. The Service receives about 2500 planning applications per year and is currently working towards adoption of the Core Strategy.
