The London Borough of Merton Planning function is located in the Environment and Regeneration Department and is split between the Plans and Projects Section (in the Regeneration and Leisure Division) and the Development Control Section (in the Public Protection and Development Division).
The Plans and Projects section contains two teams: Policy & Information, and Design & Conservation. These teams are made up of 15 planners, urban designers, a conservation officer and technical/administrative support. The section is primarily responsible for planning research and information; the Local Development Framework; conservation area appraisals; listed building advice; urban design; planning briefs; and site and area planning projects.
The Development Control Section contains 30 planning officers, technicians and administrative support staff organised into three teams – two area teams covering the North and South of the borough and a borough-wide enforcement team, also dealing with trees.
