The theme this year:

PLANNING FOR MINERALS: TRY TO SEE IT MY WAY

Changes are afoot in attitudes to the provision of minerals which are putting the planning system under pressure. Despite the Government line that minerals are essential to the nation’s prosperity and quality of life, decisions are being taken at all levels which seem to give little weight to that premise.

The top-down approach embodied in the Managed Aggregates Supply System is being questioned. Complex methods of apportionment are being sought to replace those based on existing patterns of supply. Up-to-date policy documents are proving difficult to deliver through the Local Development Framework system and planning permissions are taking longer to achieve. Both the planning system and future supplies of minerals are in danger of being compromised by new environmental regulation.

The Conference will provide an opportunity for representatives of the different parties involved in the mineral planning process to present their views on where we are at present, the direction in which we should be moving and the changes that they believe might be necessary to achieve that. Delegates will have the opportunity to join the debate and engage with current issues that are critical to the future form and direction of mineral planning.
