Speakers & Topics

The cross boundary/disciplinary meeting will concern the better integration of water management policy into the planning frameworks of England and Wales. Breaking and emerging water policy and practice will take centre stage, including new duties for surface water management and water cycle planning for lead local authorities deriving from the Flood and Water Management Act (2010), the Flood Risk Regulations (2009) and the Water White Paper, but set squarely against the complex, challenging planning context to include the draft National Planning Policy Framework from England and emerging Welsh planning policy - delivering economic renewal, housing targets and so forth. This intersection between planning and water management is the real heart of the meeting - postulating planning issues/case studies and, inspired by planners in the Netherlands and elsewhere, challenging engineers, hydrologists and other professions to look at water management with a 'planner's hat on.
