Introduction
Guide Home Page Network Home Page
Spatial planning decisions have fundamental implications for our environment. Bad decisions can threaten local amenity and biodiversity as well as cause pollution that potentially contributes to global environmental problems, such as climate change. Good decisions, however, have the ability to incorporate environmental protection, offer potential for enhancement and help to reduce our impact on vital natural resources and systems.
This interactive guide provides an introduction to the role of spatial planning in light of some of the most pressing environmental issues. It is not designed to be exhaustive, but presents an overview of the relationship between spatial planning and environmental protection and provides an overview of key environmental issues, concepts and legislation that apply to England.
More detail is available though a series of pages that give greater insight into key general topics, organisations and methods of assessment, to help all planners familiarise themselves with the main issues and opportunities. They also provide useful signposts to further information.
