Record 90 people and projects vying for most prestigious planning awards

RTPI 2017 Awards Logo _Large

A project generating electricity from kites in Scotland, Europe’s biggest biomedical research institute under one roof and a new garden village near Swindon reflect the diversity of the finalists at this year’s RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence.

Masterplans, housing and heritage led projects along with major infrastructure schemes all feature strongly in the shortlist announced today. There are 90 finalists competing across 14 categories. The prestigious Silver Jubilee Cup is awarded to the project determined the best overall by the judges, last year's winners Plymouth City Council are pictured below.

The Awards for Planning Excellence are the most established and respected awards in the UK planning industry. Running for 40 years, they celebrate exceptional examples of planning and the contribution planners make to society. There was a nearly 40% increase in entrants this year.

Stephen Wilkinson, President of the Royal Town Planning Institute said:

“The huge increase in entrants and finalists in this year’s awards reflects the important contribution planners are making to delivering infrastructure and housing. The finalists represent some outstanding contributions to planning which continue to make a positive impact on the environment in the interests of  communities across the UK. The judges will find it difficult choosing the winners given the high calibre of entries this year.”
