RTPI Cymru welcomes delivery of affordable homes in Welsh Programme for Government

20 September 2016

RTPI Cymru welcomes the Welsh Government’s commitment to its ambitious target of delivering 20,000 affordable homes, as outlined in their Programme for Government (2016-2021) released today. As a leading partner of Homes for Wales, they welcome the confirmation of this target for delivering housing, having called for an ambitious plan for housing to be a part of the Programme for Government.

RTPI Cymru also supports the commitment from Welsh Government to:

  • introduce a new ‘rent to own’ housing model
  • explore options to end land banking
  • collaborate long term with house builders to deliver accelerated rates of house building
  • safeguard social housing by ending Right to Buy
  • support the work of Rural Housing Enablers

The Programme for Government, called Welsh Government Taking Wales Forward, also includes a suite of transport schemes aimed at improving connectivity across Wales. RTPI Cymru strongly urges the Welsh Government to embrace strategic planning and integrate infrastructure to support existing and new development. The City Deal offers an opportunity for long term enhancement through strategic planning. In addition it outlines the establishment of a National Infrastructure Commission.

RTPI Cymru is pleased to see the Programme for Government contain measures that will contribute to achieving some of the asks it made of the Welsh Government ahead of the elections in May this year.
