New planning documents – positive step forward for communities and businesses

16 January 2015

The publication of the Planning Policy Statement and outline of the Planning and Development (No. 2) Bill 2014 released yesterday have been welcomed by RTPI Ireland.

Conor Norton, RTPI Chair of Ireland:

“RTPI Ireland welcomes the publication of these very important documents. They are another step on the road to introducing an effective system that helps to create great places for people across Ireland. We will work with Ministers and officials in Government to use these documents to build the confidence the public has in the planning system and to ensure that communities, developers and politicians see the value it brings”

We feel that the key principles outlined in the policy statement are a good building block to take forward a system that the public has confidence in and that developers can engage with.

The key priorities set out in the statement, such as the establishment of a planning regulator; planning and economic recovery; enhancing service delivery and quality in planning outcomes, provide a useful framework for planners to take planning forward.

There is still a need, however, to ensure that the changes to the system and the delivery of the planning service are adequately resourced.

RTPI Ireland will be keen to engage with Ministers and the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government to clarify the Planning Policy Statement’s status and how it will be monitored and reviewed.
